3 Math Morning Meeting Activities Your Students Will Love

Math, Morning Meeting
Blog header for Math Morning Meeting Activities

Morning Meeting Activities play a crucial role in setting the tone for the day ahead in elementary classrooms. They offer a valuable opportunity to reinforce academic skills, foster a sense of community, and much more.

Morning Meeting is particularly beneficial because it:

  • Begins the day positively,
  • Encourages the practice of speaking and listening skills,
  • Helps students ease into their daily routine,
  • Provides a fun and engaging start to the morning.

During these activities, students not only enjoy playing games but also have the chance to review existing academic skills or explore new ones. Personally, I find math activities particularly effective during Morning Meeting, as they allow my students to gain additional practice with various math skills and standards.

In this post, I’ll share three of my favorite Math activities that students can enjoy and benefit from during Morning Meeting.

Noggle

Noggle is an amazing activity that you can differentiate to meet the needs of your grade level and/or students. For this activity, students are looking at a table of numbers and they have to create as many number sentences as they can.  The trick in this activity is the numbers have to be touching. I typically have students do this activity independently and tell them they’re trying to beat their score from last time.

This can be used to create addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division sentences. The numbers can be small or large and students can even use multiple numbers. I challenge my students to create an addition sentence with multiple addends.

Digit Place

Digit Place is a great game to use for building number sense and place value! This game can alo be differentiated and used at different grade levels.

Here’s how you play:

  1. You make 3 columns on the white board – Guess | Digits | Place
  2. I also put up numbers 0-9 so we can cross off numbers after we eliminate them – there is a lot of strategy in this game too.
  3. You think of a secret number that the kids will have to figure out – this can be 2-digit, 3-digit, 4-digit, etc – depending on your class’s needs.
  4. Your students will guess a number. *Let’s say my secret number is 352.  They guess 201.  I will then write their guess in the guess column and write a 1 in the digits and a 0 in the place because they got one of the digits correct (2), but that digit was not in the correct place.
  5. We keep going until we get to the correct number

*This game has some strategy to it too.  I will often have students figure out if the guess all of one number it can help us quickly figure out what the 3 digits are. For example, if they guess 999 and I say 0 numbers are correct – then we know 9 isn’t one of the numbers.

Ways to Make

Ways to Make is another math activity that can be differentiated. For this activity, students are coming up with as many ways as they can think of to make a certain number.

For example – the number 10 could be made up with 5 + 5 or 20 – 10. Students could also use place value, tallies, coins (dime, 2 nickels, 10 pennies) to represent the number.

Students can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, money, and more to help them represent the numbers. The goal like Noggle is for them to come up with as many ways as they can!

Quick and Easy Morning Meeting Greetings for Busy Teachers

Morning Meeting

Teachers – do you find yourself pressed for time during Morning Meeting? It can be hard to fit it in to your already jam packed day! These greetings I’m sharing today are super quick and easy and will not add too much time to your Morning Meeting routine.

Greeting is one of the quickest parts of the Morning Meeting routine, but also one of the most important.  Every child in our classrooms needs to feel valued and seen every day.  For some of our students, the first time they hear “good morning” is when they arrive at school.  Morning Meeting Greeting gives everyone a chance to feel important and feel welcomed at school.  I can’t stress enough how important it is and how it can help start everyone’s day off in a positive way.

That being said, I know it can sometimes seem easy to just skip the greeting.  It’s quick, the kids won’t miss it, I don’t have time for one more thing…but I want you to keep in mind the importance and also – it doesn’t have to take a long time….it doesn’t have to be complicated.

To help save you time in the classroom and still focus on this important component, here are 8 quick and easy Morning Meeting greetings you can use.

Morning Meeting Greetings #1 – Handshake

Photo of two students shaking hands

Learning how to properly handshake is an important lifeskill and one you can teach during Morning Meeting. For this greeting, students look each other in the eye, shake hands, and say “Good Morning___.”

Morning Meeting Greetings #2 – High Five

Photo of kids giving a high five

Another simple greeting – I like to do have my students do the High Five greeting on Fridays. Instead of students saying, “Good Morning,” to each other they say, “Happy Friday!” I call it Happy Friday High Five greeting.

Morning Meeting Greetings #3 – Combine Share and Greeting

To kill 2 birds with 1 stone, I will sometimes combine the share and greeting component of Morning Meeting. For example, our share question might be – what’s your favorite recess activity and why? Instead of going around the circle to share, students will share as the greet. They will find a student, say good morning, and then share their response to the share question.

Morning Meeting Greetings #4 – Fist Bump

Photo of students giving a fist bump

Students love giving a fist bump as a greeting. Students will have about one minute to go around and great as many people as they can. They will give them a fist bump and then say, “Good morning!”

Morning Meeting Greetings #5 – Elbow Bump

This greeting is similar to the fist bump, but great for cold and flu season lol. Instead of bumping fists, students will bump elbows as they greet each other.

Morning Meeting Greetings #6 – Toe Tap

Photo of kids sitting in a circle

This is another great kinesthetic greeting! Students will greet each other by tapping shoes and then saying, “Good Morning!”

Morning Meeting Greetings #7 – Foreign Language Greeting

Students greet each other using a foreign language. For example, Buenos dias Matt,  Bonjour Cindy, etc. If your schools offers opportunities to learn different languages in specials, this can be a great time for students to practice.

Morning Meeting Greetings #8 – Silent Greeting

Photo of kids with hands in

This is a favorite of all teachers! For silent greeting, students have to figure out a way to silently greet each other. Sometimes students will do a finger wave, regular wave, mouth the words, or an air high five.

3 ELA Morning Meeting Activities Your Students Will Love

Morning Meeting

Morning Meeting Activities are an important component to the morning meeting routine.  The activity portion is a great way to review academic skills, build classroom community, and more.

Morning Meeting itself is extremely beneficial in the elementary classroom because it…

  • Starts the day off in a positive way
  • Provides an opportunity to practice speaking and listening skills
  • Eases students into the day
  • Is a fun and engaging way to start the morning

While the activity component can be a great time to play fun games, it can also be a time to review academic skills or start to introduce new ones.  I love using ELA activities during Morning Meeting so my students can continue to get even more practice with various language arts standards.

Here are three of my favorite ELA activities for students to work on during Morning Meeting.

Story Starter

Story Starter is always a class favorite when it comes to Morning Meeting Activities. For this activity, I give the students a start to the story and then they finish it. I’ve done this activity together as a class, had students work in groups or with a partner to write their story, or work independently.  I always tell students they can use their imagination, but have to keep it appropriate for school! They love being able to be creative with their storytelling!

Here are a few example story starters…

  • 3, 2, 1 – The rocket ship blasted off and then….
  • I jumped off the bus and then…
  • The snowman came to life and then…
  • My car started flying and then…

Word Ladder

Photo of word ladder activity with a blue pen - words written in a vertical line are bat, bet, bed, fed, fad, dad, sad

Word Ladder is a great way for students to practice their phonics skills. For word ladder, I choose a starting word and then students create new words from that word. But, the trick is- they can only change one letter each time!

For example – cat, bat, bet, met, mat, hat, hit, bit, bin, fin

For this activity, I like to try to pick a starting word that focuses on our current phonics skills – short vowels, digraphs, etc so students can continue to get practice with words focused on those skills.

For this game, you can play as a whole class, in a partnership or group, or independently. Their goal is to create as many real words as they can.

Word Creator

Word Creator is another great opportunity for students to practice phonics skills and building words.  Students are given a grid of letters and have to create words with those letters. The trick in this activity is the letters have to be touching. I typically have students do this activity independently and tell them they’re trying to beat their score from last time. I remind students they can come up with one-letter, two-letter, three-letter, four-letter, five-letter words, and more!
