Teacher Love Notes

Uncategorized

Every year I receive tons of sweet pictures and notes from the kiddos and of course they all want me to hang each one of them up. Well I saw this idea on Pinterest and decided to make a Teacher’s Love Notes binder.  Each time I got a sweet picture or note, it went into the binder.  Then, during independent reading time, kids were able to look through it and see all of their beautiful pieces of work.  The kiddos really enjoyed looking at it, it kept it organized so it wasn’t all over the classroom, and it made them happy to know I had kept their work.  This is definitely an idea I will continue to use next year.

I’m not sure where I got this cute cover, but I think I found it somewhere on Teacher’s Pay Teachers. So, I apologize for not knowing who to give credit to, but thought this binder cover was super cute!

Some of the sweet notes for the binder…

I’m back!

Uncategorized

Hi everyone!
As I mentioned in my last blog post, I have some big changes coming this summer.  I will be moving to Las Vegas and will also be moving grade levels.  After teaching first grade for five years, next year I’ll be moving on up to second grade (and will need to rename my blog).  I’m finally out of my classroom and cleaning that out was quite a project.  I’m not sure how I collected that many things, but boy do I have a lot of school stuff.  And now that I’m avoiding packing up my apartment, I’ve decided to do a few blog updates.  Blog updating is way more fun than cleaning and packing more.  Anyways, I’m hoping to update a few times this summer and hoping to also have some great second grade ideas to be sharing next year. Thank you for your patience with me! I’m excited for this next step in the journey and excited for the busy, crazy summer I have ahead of me!  Hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far!

Sorry for the major delay in posts…

Uncategorized

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the major delay and slow down in posting.  Within the last month or two, I decided to move to Henderson, Nevada and have been super busy with applying and getting ready to move.  I’m so lucky that I have already been offered a job and will be teaching 2nd grade in a Las Vegas area school.  Now, things are crazy with trying to finish up the school year, close out my current classroom, get ready for summer school, get ready to move, etc. I promise I’ll get back to blogging in June when things slow down for a bit.

Hope everyone enjoys the end of the school year!

100th Day of School

Uncategorized

We had our 100th day of school a week or two ago and we had a blast.  The 100th day of school celebration is always a lot of fun and we added some great new activities to our celebration this year.

Finding 100 Words
This page I found on atozteacherstuff.com.  The kids take clipboards, their paper, and go around the classroom trying to find 100 words to write down. They love this activity and they always get excited to see how many words they can find.

Story and 100 Things Activity
Then, we read the story 100th Day Worries and decided what we would collect if we needed to collect 100 Things. The cute 100 Things collection page comes from FirstGradeBlueSkies Teacher’s Pay Teachers page.  She did a great job designing these cute 100th day pages and the best part of all…they are FREE!

I would have 100 clothes because they are so very stylish.
I would have 100 diamonds because they are so very shiny.

Special 100th Day Glasses
This is one of my favorite activities that I’ve done every year in first grade. This one just takes a die cut machine for the numbers and a craft stick.  These special glasses are decorated by the kiddos and then used with a math activity later in the day.

Math – Find 100 Stars:
For this activity, the kiddos use their special 100th day glasses. Now, these glasses have magic powers. These glasses make it possible for the kids to find the 100 stars I’ve hidden around the classroom.  For this activity, the night before, I hide 100 stars (with the numbers 1 through 100 written on them) around the room. Some in easy locations and some in some harder locations.  The kids use their special glasses and search the room for the stars. Then, after about two minutes, we start filling in the 100’s pocket chart.  After filling in the stars we’ve found, we then see what we’re missing and go on the hunt again. Some years you end up losing a star or two, but it’s always funny to see how excited they get when they find that missing star a month after 100th day.

To end our day, we talked about what we would buy with $100 and filled it in on a cute worksheet. It’s pretty funny to see what the kids think they can buy with $100.  Afterwards, we decorated this cute 100th Day Bookmark that my teacher candidate found.

Hope everyone had or a has a great 100th day of school!

Time flies….

Uncategorized

Wow – I have absolutely no idea where December and half of January has gone.  Things got pretty busy as they do during the holiday season so now I have lots of catching up to do with  my blog. Look for lots of blog entries today and I apologize that some are out of order (a New Year’s post), but I figure better late then never.  Hope everyone is enjoying their 3 day weekend!

Wow….How is it October tomorrow already?

Uncategorized

I can’t believe that tomorrow is the first day of October and that I haven’t posted an entry in pretty much all of September. My class this year has been pretty rough so unfortunately when I get home, I’ve had no energy for blogging.  However, that will all change next week. I see the light at the end of the tunnel…well at least for a week, but I’ll take a week. Next week for us is Fall Break and we have the whole wonderful week off! Look for some blog entries and updates then.  Sorry for my hiatus from blogging.

More posts coming soon

Uncategorized

Sorry everyone for my lack of posts lately. With moving recently and the start of school last week, things have been crazy busy.  This weekend, I will post some more of my task cards for literacy station and some great first week ideas.  Hope everyone is enjoying the rest of their summer or the beginning of school…depending on where you live :-)!

Google Docs Question

Uncategorized

So I have some files I want to upload to my blog, but everytime I’ve tried to use Google Docs they turn out looking weird. Any recommendations for how use Google Docs or tips? When I do it somehow the file gets on their twice – once in the font it is supposed to be in and then repeated in a regular Times New Roman type font.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!!

Comprehension Connections – Determining Importance

Uncategorized

This year our lit coach had another great book for us to read – Comprehension Connections by Tanny McGregor.  This book is fantastic and ties in with a lot of the Common Core Reading Standards.  My favorite part about this book is it provides kids with concrete examples to multiple reading concepts – schema, determining importance, visualizing, etc.

My favorite lesson so far from the book was the purse lesson on determining importance. In this lesson, you have the kids help you solve a problem and I used her example from the book.  I was going on a walk/hike and didn’t want to take my purse with me.  So, the kids get to see what you have in your purse (which they love!) and then help you decide which items are important for you to take with you.  There was a lot of good thinking going on and a lot of interesting answers.  One student thought I didn’t need to take my keys because I could just leave them on top of my car. When I explained to him that someone might steal my keys and my car, he said I could put a box over my keys to hide them :-).  Oh, I love how kids think!

Below you’ll find the anchor chart I used to chart our thinking and decisions. I found an example of the anchor chart on Pinterest and the book also has some examples.  Great book and great lesson!
