New Classroom – WARNING – Major work in progress

Uncategorized

So, I’ve debated back and forth the last 2 days whether or not to show the journey in setting up a new classroom. As all of you know, you start with a huge mess that looks like a tornado hit and then after a lot of hard work – your beautiful classroom emerges. As I mentioned in my last post, this is a new classroom for me. I’ve been in my last first grade classroom for 5 years so I had pretty much everything how I wanted it. Now, I’m at a new school in a new state and now in 2nd grade. I’m also in a portable for my first time, so I’m definitely figuring things out as I go and it’s definitely a change. But, change can be good…right??

Anyways, since many teachers move classrooms and go through change, I decided to show the progress as I go through setting up my new classroom.  This also is to help myself see that each day it’s getting better and starting to look more like a real classroom. Sometimes when you’re in the middle of setting up a room – it seems like it’ll never get done and never be how you want it – so this blog entry is almost therapeutic for me to see that I have done something the last 2 days and have made some progress.  Bear with me and please know this is a definite work progress and I’m aware I still have a ways to go.

Here are the before pictures – what my room looked like when I first got my keys yesterday –

Now, none of my stuff is in the classroom at this point. And, let me tell you, I have a lot of stuff.  As my boyfriend said when moving me into the classroom, I have more teaching things then he has life possessions lol.  I bet I’m not the only teacher in that boat :-).  Now, this stuff on the table to my surprise isn’t mine. This used to be the book room and didn’t totally get cleared out yet.

 Day #1  Progress

On Day 1, I got my classroom library taken out of boxes and re-organized. This one was an important one to start with because it helped me get rid of a lot of boxes and be able to actually see some of the classroom floor.

I also got my teacher books organized and put into one of the metal cabinets. This books are organized by teaching use – Mental Images, Back to School, Math, Behavior, etc.

 Day #2

When I walked in on Day 2, I saw desks. I’ve had tables the last few years for students to use, but this year I’ll have desks. Those tables in the picture have since been moved out of the room so I’ll definitely have room to set-up the desk area in groups. Yikes- look at all those boxes to go through still….

Another picture of the beginning of Day 2, boy do I have a lot of teaching stuff.

Teacher Area – Now, I did get rid of my teacher desk at my old school, but tables are very limited at my new school and I have to have the computer area here for the Smart Board, so the teacher desk is staying even though I’m not a fan of them.  I also have a printer in my room, which is awesome – easy access to printing!
End of Day 2 – Cabinet – Here I have all of the teaching books you saw in Day 1 pictures and also extra math manipulatives.

In my second cabinet, I’m putting my extra supplies. I have them all organized in their own tubs and labeled – I love my labeling and organization!

So, by the end of day 2, I moved the reading area over just a bit as you can see in this picture. In the main bookshelf in the middle, I have my math manipulatives for the students to use. The bins on both sides of the bookshelf are for Math Stations.

As I mentioned in the picture above, I moved my reading area over to the other wall. It seemed like a better use of the space for now…we’ll see – I’m notorious for changing my mind and moving things around a billion times until I find the “just right” spot.

So there you have it – after about 10 hours of work in my new classroom – here’s where I’m at. I still have a LONG ways to go, but it’s a start. Thanks for taking a peek at my progress and stay tuned for more pictures as I go. I won’t be getting back into my room until Friday because of New Teacher Training during the next two days at the Venetian.  I’m not excited for information overload, but it is pretty cool that we get to be trained at the Venetian – much better than a board room in a district office :-). Have a great night everyone!

Teacher Week – Tuesday – Classroom Digs

Uncategorized

I’m linking up again today with Bloghoppin’ for Teacher Week. Today’s discussion – Classroom Digs.  Now, I just got the keys yesterday for my new classroom in Vegas so I’m nowhere near ready to show the classroom digs just yet (although stay tuned for my next post to show you my work in progress as I go through organizing and setting up a brand new classroom).  Since my other room isn’t officially “classroom digs” ready, I decided to show you pictures from my old classroom in Arizona.  I taught first grade in the same classroom for 5 years so I really had everything organized and where I wanted it.  Check it out below.

View from the front door of my classroom.  All ready for Meet the Teacher with their TEAMS Binders on their desk!

View from my desk area.  I loved having this classroom rug from Lakeshore. Everyone had a spot and had an area to be – it worked perfectly!

Don’t mind the clutter.  All Star Work with clothespins to easily change out student work.  The bins on top of the cubbies are for Math Stations.

As I mentioned in my Meet the Teacher, I’m a huge Suns fan. Part of our math activities every day included figuring out math facts with the score from the last game.  We’d tally wins and losses, figure out the difference points-wise between each team, days til the next game, etc. It was a fun way to practice a variety of math skills.

Math Bulletin – Calendar, Math Station Expectations, Hundreds Chart, Tooth Chart, and Place Value Chart for Days in School.

Management Board Area – Clip Chart, Math Stations Management Board, Lit Stations Management Board, and Classroom Jobs. I hate chalkboards, so this was a great way to still use the space, but not mess with chalk and that lovely chalk sound :-).

Fluency Station – I was so lucky at my school to have multiple small tables that worked awesome for stations.  This table was for my fluency station. I had the kit from Lakeshore that I got through Donor’s Choose.  In this area, I also have my classroom promise and expectations, binder turn-in area, and the purple tub is how I passed back student work. Each kiddo has a file with their name on it which made it easy to organize and easy to pass back a pile to each student.

Classroom Library – I loved my classroom library because I was able to make a cozy little separate area out of it with the bookshelves and bookstands. On the wall, I posted the reading anchor charts we made as a class.  My books are all organized by categories – Picture Book, Mystery, Non-fiction, School, Magic School Bus, Animals, Sports, Junie B. etc. I have a label on each storage box indicating what books go in there. I also have a label inside each book that corresponds to the label on the box so the kids know where the books go.

At this school, we were so lucky to have this big main common area that about 6 classrooms shared. We each had a little space in it.  This was my Making Words Station that I got through Donor’s Choose out in the pod

Cubbies out in the pod area.  I love my storage organization tubs and labels. Here I have all of my student math books and math manipulatives.

My area.  Here I have my computer desk and on the cubbies I have my activities for the week.  The door leads to a class bathroom, which was so nice to have with first graders.

Another view of the cubby area in the pod. It was so nice having all of this extra space to use for storage and groups right outside my classroom door.

The opposite side of the Making Words Station in the pod – here I had my spelling station. Again you have another view of how big the pod area is.  This area is shared by 6 teachers, but it was so nice to have additional space.

Computer and doc camera that goes with the Smart Board and also a reading bulletin that always had our Sound/Spellings on it.

A view of the back of the classroom .

Small Group Area – again please don’t judge the mess.  The math cart houses more math manipulatives.  The horseshoe table worked well for pulling small groups for reading and math. The bookshelves housed some of my reading curriculum, teacher books, and materials for small groups.

Writing Station and Writing Area.

Bucketfilling Bulletin – in my small group area. I love, love, love bucketfilling – my kiddos each had a baggie with their name on it for their notes (my student teacher came up with the baggie idea).

So, there is a little glimpse at my room and home away from home for the last 5 years. Stay tuned for a post on the progress in my new classroom and eventually, probably next week, an official unveiling of the new room.

Looking forward to checking out everyone’s awesome classrooms in the linky party!

Teacher Week – Monday – Meet the Teacher

Uncategorized

I’m linking up with Teacher Week 2013 and am so excited to be participating in all of the great linky parties this week.  Monday’s Linky Party – Meet the Teacher.  Join in on the fun here.

1.  I recently, as of a month ago, moved to Las Vegas to be with my amazing boyfriend.  We live out in the Henderson area, but still make it to the Strip a few times a month.  One of my favorite parts of the Strip is being able to check out the Bellagio Water Show and their Gardens – the people that create these displays are amazing!

2. I’m starting my 7th year teaching.  I’m not sure where the time went, but somehow I’m on my 7th year of teaching.  My first year I taught 3rd grade. The last five years I taught 1st grade and this year I’ll be teaching 2nd grade.  I’m excited for the new grade level, but a little nervous too.

3.  I love sports! I’m a huge Phoenix Suns fan (just moved from AZ) and love basketball. Works out well for me that my boyfriend is a basketball coach at a prep high school.

4. Since I love the Suns so much, my classroom decor used to be Phoenix Suns. I was literally known as the Suns teacher at my school :-).  Below is a picture of my old room. I get to start in my new room tomorrow.  Since Vegas doesn’t have a pro-team looks like I’ll just be going with a basketball sports theme.

5.  I love to shop!  I have a slight shopping addiction and my favorite store especially for teacher clothes is Ann Taylor Loft! I just love that place and could practically spend my whole paycheck there.

6. I love ASU.  I attended Arizona State for undergrad and will always be a Sun Devil.  I had season tickets for football for a few years and will have to still try to make it to a game or two each season.

7. I love to work out. Well, some days I love to work out. Some days I hate it, but I’m trying to be better about it. My goal is for 24 Hour Fitness and I to become best friends this year. I enjoy taking their Zumba and BodyPump classes.

8.  I love to travel. I don’t do it enough, but this summer I was lucky enough to be able to go to Chicago (never been there before) and Santa Monica. Had a great time on both trips and am looking forward to many more.

9. I enjoy crafting. JoAnn Fabrics, Michaels, and Hobby Lobby are some of my other favorite shopping places. I could spend like hours walking around each place. I love trying out crafts and ideas from Pinterest. I’m not the most crafty person so they don’t always turn out, but it’s fun to try.

10. I love pool days.  I love to lounge with a good book at the pool while working on my tan. I’m sad with summer coming to an end that those pool days will be numbered, but that’s the good thing about Vegas – there’s still hot weather til October and of course there are weekends left for pool time.

Hope you enjoyed learning a few things about me. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone better through the linky party!

Scotch Laminator – Best Invention Ever!

Uncategorized

I think I’m in teacher heaven. I just went out and bought a Scotch Laminator from Target and I’m in love.  I’ve only laminated a few things, but this might be one of my favorite teacher purposes.  Thank you to everyone who kept talking about this wonderful machine on their blogs! Definitely a teacher must have and it’s really inexpensive!

Student Birthdays

Uncategorized

I decided to change up my student birthday gift this year and tweaked an idea I saw on Pinterest. For the last few years, I gave each student a birthday postcard and pencil on their birthday. This worked, but I was never organized enough to have it ready and sometimes would not be prepared.  This year, I’m doing crazy straws as the bday gift with a generic note from me.  I got this cute container at Michaels and hot glued some buttons to the top part.  The crazy straws I got from Dollar Tree – 6 for $1.  The paper part I did myself with some help from My Cute Graphics for the clipart and border.  Now, this year, students can grab a crazy straw on their bday out of the tin – much easier for me and a fun gift for them!

Top Ten Tuesday – My Dream Classroom

Uncategorized

I’m linking up again this week with Courtney over at Swimming Into Second for her Top Ten Tuesday linky party.  This week the focus is on your dream classroom.  Below are some of the things I would want for my dream classroom.

My Top Ten:

1. Space
I don’t have a picture for this one, but my dream classroom would have MORE space.  I’m at a new school this year and my classroom is definitely a lot smaller than my old classroom so space is a huge must-have for me!

2. Books
Like most teachers I have a ton of books, however I always want more.  My dream classroom would have even more books than I already have and be updated with the current new favorites and also the books that tie in more with Common Core.

3. Seating for Small Groups
I love these cute crates used for seating for a small group. My dream room would have a few of these to use doing small group time at the horseshoe table.

4. iPads
I would love to have an iPad to use for classroom purposes (like Dojo and many other things), but would also love to have a few for the students to use in the classroom. There are so many great apps that could be used during literacy stations and math stations.

5. iPods
I do have an iPod that I use for music during student work time and also for brain breaks, but I would like a few more.  I would love to have iPods accessible to use during literacy stations as a listening station. I’ve seen many teachers do this where the kiddo take the iPod and book and off they go.

6. Scotch Laminator
I’d love to have my own laminator in my classroom for easy access and use.

7. Paint
I would love to have a few walls painted in my dream classroom to give it a warm, homey feel.

8. Whole Group Rug
I had one of these at my old school, but don’t have one yet in my new classroom. I love this rug. Everyone has a spot and the colored rows make it easy to call kids to line up or go to their seats.

9. Storage
My dream classroom would have built-in storage options to store all the lovely bazillion items us teachers have.

10. Windows
I’d love to have windows in my classroom to bring in light and fresh air.  I can prop a door open, but it’d be so nice to have the natural light all of the time.

I’m excited to see all the great dream classroom ideas out there!

Let’s Get Acquainted – School Year Goals

Uncategorized

I’m linking up with Latoya Reed over at Flying Into First Grade for her Let’s Get Acquainted – School Year Goals linky party.  I’m at a brand new school, in a brand new grade, in a brand new district and state, so I have many goals, but I’ve listed my top goals below…

School Year Goals:
  • Live a balanced life – I’m a bit of a workaholic as many teachers are and something I need to work on is more balance. Work is important and definitely a priority, but I need to make time in my life for working out, hanging out with friends and my boyfriend, crafting, etc.
  • Get a better system for weekly plans – Every school year I’ve tried to be more organized with my planning so things for the week would be done the week ahead and every year I’ve started well, but then failed a bit.  This year I want to have everything ready to go for the next week on Friday afternoon before I leave for the weekend.
  • Keep things clean and organized – This is another goal that I always make and little by little fall apart with.  Since this is a new school and new classroom, I have a clean slate and would like to try to work on keeping paperwork and things more organized.
  • Integrating Lessons – Last year with Common Core, we started to work on integrating lessons.  I loved it and so did the kids! This year with a new grade level and curriculum, I’d like to put together some more lessons that have integrated reading and writing with the other content areas.

I’m looking forward to checking out everybody’s goals. Be sure to join the linky party!

Top 10 Classroom Must Haves

Uncategorized

I’m linking up with Courtney over at Swimming Into Second for her Top 10 Classroom Must Haves linky party.  Great linky party idea with everyone stocking up on supplies and those classroom must haves!

1. Post-It Notes
I can never ever have enough post-it notes.  My new favorites are the ones below with the lines.  I love using these for making to-do lists!

2. Smart Board
I don’t think I could teach in a classroom without a Smart Board now after having one for the last 5 years.  They are wonderful for lessons and stations and great for student engagement!

3. Flair Pens
These are my absolute favorite pens to write with!

4. Labels
I use labels for everything!  I use them to label my classroom library books, label kid’s supplies, organize, due dates for book orders, etc.

5. Sheet Protectors
I love using these in binders to keep everything safe and protected.

6. Storage Containers
I am obsessed with storage containers – any size, any shape, any color – love them!

7. Tabletop White Board
I use this tabletop white board that can be found at Lakeshore Learning during small group. It fits perfectly on the horseshoe table and is large enough for the group to see it.

8. EZ Grader
This is a must-have grading tool – makes it easy!

9. Laptop
I use my laptop for everything school-related!

10. Chart Paper

Thanks for checking out my Top 10 Classroom Must Haves!

10 Things I’ve Learned from Teaching

Uncategorized

I’m linking up with Miss Kindergarten for her 10 Things I’ve Learned from Teaching linky party.  I’m just starting my 7th year of teaching and I can honestly say I’ve learned a million things since leaving college and actually being in the field.

1. Patience is probably the most important skill you can learn or have as a teacher.  You’ll need patience with the kiddos, patience with parents, patience with special ed processes, etc.  Patience is a must for any teacher.

2. It’s important to laugh and find the fun moments in each and every day. Teaching is a hard profession and it can be easy to get bogged down with all the stressful stuff.  It’s really important that I find funny things in each day, whether it be something funny a kid said or did or a funny story from a co-worker.

3. You will never check everything off your to-do list.  My first year I’d stay at school until 7:00 most nights and was so frustrated because I never got everything done on my to-do list. I’ve since realized no matter how late you stay or how many hours you work, you won’t get everything done.  So, now I give myself a certain time to stay til every day and what doesn’t get finished is first on the todo list for tomorrow.

4.  Be on the secretary’s good side.  I was lucky to have an awesome secretary who I became friends with, but secretaries pretty much run the school right behind the principal.  They can help you get supplies, subs, etc.  You definitely want to be on their good side :-).

5.  Be on the janitor’s good side.  You never know when you’ll have a clean-up emergency (puke, bathroom accidents, bugs) and you want that janitor to be there quickly to help you.  They have a tough job and often a thankless job – make sure you show your appreciation and gratitude for them.

6.  Not every parent will like you.  This is a tough one for me since I’m a people pleaser and want to be liked by everyone.  Most years I’ve been lucky to have wonderful parents who are supportive and on board.  Every once in while you’ll get a difficult parent who might not be a fan of you, but you have to remember that they are only one parent.

7.  Always remember that it’s all about the kids.  As a teacher your wear many hats and one of the most important is being an advocate for each student in your class.  You need to always stick up for what’s best for each child even if it’s not the popular decision.

8.  It’s important to have friends at work.  I can’t tell you how many times I have been so thankful to work with not only people I call terrific teachers and wonderful colleagues, but also amazing friends.  It’s nice to work at a place where you enjoy working, but you also enjoy the people you work with.

9.  Sometimes the best lessons and activities are the ones planned on the fly.  Every teacher knows that no matter how much you plan and how much you prepare, improvising happens each and every day.  For me, some of my best lessons and ideas have come out of those moments where an idea hits me in the middle of teaching and I just go with it.

10. Teach the standards, but don’t forget about those teachable moments.  Teaching these days isn’t just about teaching the curriculum and standards.  Teachers now are teaching kids how to behave, how to have manners, how to work together, how to cope, and more.  As a teacher, I find it’s important to remember that even though you have the set standards to teach, you still need to give time to those teachable moments that happen each and every day.

Thanks for checking out my list! I’m excited to see the rest in the linky party!
