Phew…what a week it has been! I forgot how crazy that week leading up to school can be!! I’ve had teacher trainings, meetings, and classroom set-up all week! I’ll be honest, I’m definitely looking forward to no alarm clock tomorrow and sleeping in!! I’m linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching to share what I’ve been up to this crazy, busy week!
Crazy that this was my last week off of summer! I start back Monday with teacher trainings and meetings all week!! I need like a few more weeks of summer…but I guess it’s time!
Wow! First week of August is done. I have one more week to go until teachers go back for set-up and meetings. This summer has flown by! I’m linking back up with Doodle Bugs Teaching again for another Five for Friday. Check out what I’ve been up to this week…
This was the last week of my summer math workshop class. One of our focuses this week was geometry. The kids loved building 2D and 3D shapes using the Dive Into Shapes Kit. I got it through the Scholastic Bonus Points Catalog and it’s well worth the bonus points! The kit includes cards directing students how to build the different shapes. They also can build 3D items and practice fractions.
Oh the labeling and the class list! I was hoping to start labeling, but no go. No class list for a little while longer. I love this from the Hardcore Teacher Resources. Every year, without fail, I’ve labeled a billion things with the name that is provided to me in the computer system to then find out they go by something else. And, it’s even better when it’s like the picture and the name they go by has nothing to do with their given name. If parents only knew we spent hours and I mean hours, putting their child’s name on EVERYTHING!
My Opinion Writing Prompt cards are one of my more popular items in my TPT store. As I have been updating items and changing covers, I took a peek at this one and went WOAH!! This was one of my first products and boy has my style changed. So, the opinion cards have gotten a much needed facelift! If you have already purchased them, please re-download. I’ve added additional cards and made it more my style. I do have two different versions for printing. One version is the bright colors shown above and the other is a little more printer friendly!
A few more pictures from AZ. I love AZ. I went to ASU and taught in AZ for about 6 years, so AZ will always hold a special place in my heart. While we visited, we went to the water park at the hotel and to the Low Key Piano Bar (formerly the Big Bang). I love a good piano bar! So much fun!!
Have a wonderful weekend!!
Today is the last day for the TPT Best Year Ever Sale. My entire store (Jordan Johnson) is 28% off if you use the code BESTYEAR!!
In my math summer workshop class this week, we’ve been playing lots of games to practice our addition and subtraction skills. The top picture is a game called “Addition Splat.” I got it on Scholastic using bonus points. They also have a “Subtraction Splat.” It’s a fun game to practice addition and subtraction fact fluency.
The bottom picture is a game I found on K-5 Math Teaching Resources. If you haven’t used this site before, I definitely recommend. They have games and activities broken down by grade level and strand. The game we played was Find the Largest Sum. Students had 10 cards and had to make 2 five-digit numbers with them. The goal was to end up with the largest sum, so you wanted to carefully position your cards when making your five-digit number.
Earlier this week I shared a post on how I organize my classroom library. I’ve kept it this same way for about 8 years now and it has worked very well for me and my kids (first grade and second grade). I also explain how I document AR information in the books. Check it out here.
I’ve also been busy updating this week. Man, were some of my TPT items a little out-of-date and needing some work. It’s funny to see some of the first items you posted and then a year or two later how things have changed. I’m in the middle of updating all of my products. My book studies were the first to be updated. I will actually be having a book study sale next week – Tuesday and Wednesday. All of my book studies will be 20% off. I’ll also be revealing my newest book study for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Be sure to check out my sale!
So, in the whole moving into the new house process which we did in April. My closet was one of the last things to be organized. I kept putting it off…and throwing clothes on the floor. Not good lol. So this week I finally tackled my closet. I have it all organized and you can actually see the floor! We’ll see how long this lasts!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Well this week I started back in the classroom. No, not for my regular 2nd grade classroom. I still have until August 15 when teachers are due back. For the next 5 weeks, I will be teaching a summer math workshop to kids exiting grades K-1 and 2-3. I love the schedule Tuesday – Thursday, 8-12. Do you think I could petition for a school schedule like that lol? Anyways, for the next few weeks I’ll share some summer fun as well as some of the math activities we’ve been working on. Be sure to link up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday, here.
I’m finally jumping back in to my blog’s Facebook page. I had neglected it for awhile, but have found some awesome ideas, pictures, videos, articles, etc that I would love to share with all of you! Please follow my Facebook page (Team J’s Second Grade Fun) here…
Ah…summertime. While I have been working a bit this week, I still have had lots of time for relaxation. I’m loving hitting up our community pool and catching up on some good books on my Kindle. I just finished Emily Giffin’s new one, First Comes Love. I really liked it! She is one of my favorite authors.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Yesterday I was on a bit of a Growth Mindset kick. One of my teacher friends had posted the anchor chart above on Facebook. It was created by teachers at Fieldcrest Elementary. I thought it was fantastic! We use Growth Mindset in my school and all year we worked on changing our language. Instead of kids saying it’s too hard or I don’t get it, we started trying to say I don’t get it yet… Which goes into my next Growth Mindset share. Class Dojo has a YouTube channel with awesome Growth Mindset videos. They are very short, but awesome explanations in kid friendly language. My students loved seeing what Mojo and Katie were up to. You can check out the Class Dojo YouTube channel here.
